Got a Tip?

Darren Aronofsky (And Lots Of Other Directors) Eyeballing Sci-Fi ‘Moonfall’

NoahSo, having crossed make-an-ambitious-Biblical-movie-with-major-studio-money off his bucket list, what will Darren Aronofsky do next? Well, over at HBO he’s adapting Margaret Atwood‘s "MaddAddam," which he might helm as well, but it appears he’s still keeping his eye on possible feature gigs.

The Wrap reports that Aronofsky and "several top filmmakers" are taking a look David Weil‘s spec script "Moonfall." It’s apparently a sci-fi flick set on the moon with shades of "Fargo" (wut?), but the screenwriter has been a name attracting Hollywood attention for a while now thanks to his "Half Heard in the Stillness” landing on the Black List in 2013. That said, Aronofsky has only had "exploratory" talks which means, it’s way, way early in the game and it’s as likely he won’t do it as he will.

Still, the possibility of Aronofsky doing sci-fi is pretty intriguing, but original sci-fi isn’t exactly the kind of stuff Hollywood throws money at these days unless you’re Christopher Nolan. Even with the success of "Noah," sci-fi is perceived to be a hard sell to audiences at home and more crucially abroad, so we’ll see how this goes. Though maybe if it’s small scale enough and the economics makes sense, it can get rolling outside the system.
