Edwin who? We weren’t entirely sure of who he was either, but the story is pretty fascinating. Edwin Maher is a New Zealand born j0urnalist who, following a 25 year career with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation took a job in 2003 with CCTV aka China Central Television. He became the first western anchor for the broadcaster, who are essentially an arm of the Chinese government. Maher has been accused of being used as a tool for propaganda, but he has deflected the criticism by saying his job is to read the news….and that’s about it.
Anyway, the story has apparently interested David Duchovny for years and today word has arrived that financing is in place to start getting the wheels in motion. With some cash in place, the search for a screenwriter is now on, though a start date for production is still not yet on the drawing board.
Duchovny has had a spotty record on the big screen at best, but this definitely seems like intriguing material, that with the right talent, could be one of Duchovny’s most mature films to date.
