Steven Spielberg is still setting career marks five decades into his legendary career. His new Sci-Fi thriller “Disclosure Day” opened to $44 million in the U.S., which turns out to be the filmmaker’s best debut since “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” opened to $100 million in 2008. “Disclosure Day” pulled in another $48.8 million overseas for $92.8 million global to date.
At a reported $115 million production budget, the Universal Studios release will still need solid word of mouth or great overseas grosses to break even. That is somewhat concerning considering it earned just a B CinemaScore, Spielberg’s worst CinemaScore since the aforementioned “Crystal Skull.” The movie earned mostly positive reviews with a 74 on Metacritic and an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. How it handles the expected $150+ million opening of “Toy Story 5” this upcoming weekend will be a box office story to watch.
Continuing its incredible run, “Obsession” found another $19 million, down 25% from its previous weekend. The Focus Features release has now outgrossed its initial opening frame, $17.2 million, for an astounding four straight weekends. Curry Barker’s thriller has now earned $188 million in the U.S. and $286.5 million worldwide. Focus acquired the $1 million budgeted film for just $15 million out of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Scary Movie” dropped a staggering 73% for another $14.5 million and $85.3 million domestic. The reboot of the horror spoof has earned $173 million global in just 10 days. It should pass 2006’s “Scary Movie 4″ to become the second highest-grossing installment in the franchise next weekend. With just a reported $30 million production budget, it’s still a very, very profitable hit for financier Miramax. Paramount Pictures distributed worldwide.
A24’s horror hit “Backrooms” took in $11.2 million for $160 million domestic and a stellar $262 million worldwide. The studio will try to keep the good vibes going with “The Death of Robin Hood” on Friday and “The Invite” next month.
Lionsgate Premiere’s “The Furious” earned $2.75 million in just 1,251 theaters. Kenji Tanigaki‘s action flick has earned rave reviews with an 85 on Metacritic and a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. With an A CinemaScore, you have to wonder if Lionsgate will attempt to expand the thriller to more theaters next weekend.
Bleeker Street’s “Stop! That! Train” is looking like a winner for the indie distributor, pulling in $2 million in just 1,100 theaters. The Adam Shankman drag comedy spoof did super well in major cities and currently has an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. At a $5 million budget after CA tax incentives, the movie will need Focus Features to pull in solid grosses in drag-friendly territories such as the U.K., France, Spain and Australia.
New films opening on Friday include the aforementioned “Toy Story 5” and “Robin Hood.”
