‘Dune’ Editor Doesn’t Want To Talk About Deleted Scenes: “We’re All Concentrating On The Rubble On The Floor”

Can a film be one of the most surprising as well as one of the most anticipated? If so, then 2021’s “Dune: Part One” is that film. Everyone was eagerly awaiting Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic to see if it could possibly bring Frank Herbert’s classic novel to life. And not only did the film do so, but the deep, philosophical sci-fi drama was a box office hit, shocking just about everyone in the process. Now, as the film is on its way to Blu-ray/4K later this month, fans are desperate to know if there are a ton of “Dune” deleted scenes they can devour before ‘Part Two’ arrives in 2023? Well, if so, don’t ask editor Joe Walker. He isn’t going to spill any of those details.

Speaking to Collider, Joe Walker, the editor of the Oscar-contending “Dune: Part One” spoke about the idea that Denis Villeneuve had a ton of deleted scenes that were not included in the theatrical cut that was released in October. And it would appear that, if there are, Walker isn’t really interested in talking about them.

“You’re drawing me towards dangerous territory. I’ll decline to answer that one,” said the editor.

Ultimately, it doesn’t appear there are any super-secret Director’s Cut plans that are leading him to play coy about deleted scenes. It seems as if Walker is just echoing the sentiment of Denis Villeneuve, who believes ‘Part One’ is ready to stand on its own and it doesn’t need a ton of deleted scenes or a new, extended cut.

“Even if it’s great material, it might not fit, and who wants to discuss something that doesn’t fit?” He added, “We’re all concentrating on the rubble on the floor, we’re not concentrating on the sculpture that we’ve made, and that’s the thing that we’re mostly proud of.”

As mentioned, Villeneuve has been adamant about the fact that ‘Part One’ is exactly how he wanted it. He doesn’t want fans to believe there’s some sort of 4-hour cut that is just waiting to be released. So, it would seem as if it is a bit of a concerted effort on the parts of Villeneuve and Walker to not stress so much about the stuff not in the film and more on what we actually saw on the big screen (or HBO Max).

“Dune” is hitting 4K UHD/Blu-ray on January 11. No deleted scenes are expected to be included.
