'Straight Outta Compton' Filmmaker F. Gary Gray To Direct 'Saints Row' Video Game Adaptation

From blowing up cars in a video game-esque world in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise to adapting a video game franchise that likes to blow up cars in ‘Saints Row,’ director F. Gary Gray must really enjoy blowing stuff up.

Deadline is reporting that Gray has signed on to develop and direct a film based on the popular video game series “Saints Row.” The details of the story aren’t really known, but the video game follows the Third Street Saints as they attempt to take over the city from the rival gangs. But really, the video game franchise is all about going around and creating chaos in a fully-formed computer-generated city, a la “Grand Theft Auto.” Later versions of the game included superpowers and the titular gang taking over the White House. It got a bit crazy, to say the least.

We’re going to go out on a limb and say that Gray is going to focus on the first game, mainly, as inspiration. Although, it would be fun to watch a gritty gang thriller featuring superpowers.

Gray is just now wrapping up work on the upcoming “Men in Black: International.” However, he’s probably best known for his recent films “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Fate of the Furious.” Honestly, you probably have been fans of Gray for decades now, thanks to films like “The Negotiator,” “Set it Off,” “The Italian Job,” and, of course, “Friday.”

“Saints Row” is being written by Greg Russo, who is currently working on another video game franchise, “Mortal Kombat.” But really, he shouldn’t even bother with that franchise. We all know how amazing and iconic the first “Mortal Kombat” film was, right? There’s no way you can top that.

There’s no release date planned for “Saints Row,” but with Gray wrapping up ‘MIB,’ perhaps he can get this film off the ground next.
