"Freaks & Geeks" is one of the greatest television shows of all time. There, we said it, and we'll also add that its lone single season presents adolescence with more heart, humanity and humor than many shows achieve in multiple-season runs. While it's always heartbreaking to get to the end of the final episode (during our annual marathon weekend watch of the show) and realize there will be no more stories to come, there is some good news on the horizon.
Paul Feig, co-creator of "Freaks & Geeks" (along with Judd Apatow) recently stopped by the WTF With Marc Maron podcast and dropped a particularly interesting tidbit about one of the many projects he has in development. "….there is one TV series I want to do. It's a very personal, it's almost even more personal than 'Freaks & Geeks' was but in that same tone," Feig revealed. "Taking my books, I have these two memoirs, 'Superstud' and '[Kick Me],' using those, I really want to tell the real story. To me it's a coming of age, coming of middle age story about both my dad and myself and going between the two. It's a lot of funny/awkward episodes."
While Feig already mined his memories to inspire "Freaks & Geeks," there's plenty more in the well. "Superstud" in particular is more focused on Feig's journey through sex, particularly the clash between his religious beliefs as a young Christian Scientist that forbade even masturbation and the guilt he would feel when he did it anyway. And while awkward young adult sexual encounters are common fodder, no one has done it as well as Feig. And combining that with the general unease of coming-of-age, we have no problem with Feig going down that path again.
And while we wait to see which of his big screen projects is next, Feig shared this interesting little soundbite about one that didn't happen. "I got a bunch of things in development. I had one thing that was gonna go and then we had a little trouble with one of the cast dropped out. They kinda fucked it," he said. Could that be "Bridget Jones 3"? That movie seemed ready to go, but word has quieted lately and Hugh Grant isn't exactly the easiest person to sign on to a movie. Just a guess….
Anyway, we'll be eager to see whatever Feig does next.
