‘Gears Of War’: Action Filmmaker David Leitch To Direct Sci-Fi Video Game Adaptation For Netflix

A movie adaptation of the sci-fi action video game franchise “Gears of War” has been in development for over a decade. The Xbox-exclusive shooter title, with six installments under its belt, was first released back in 2006, and there is finally a concrete update about the feature film incarnation gestating at Netflix, as David Leitch is in talks to direct.

The news hails from The Hollywood Reporter, which revealed Leitch’s involvement and will have a script penned by Jon Spaihts. A screenwriter well-experienced in the sci-fi action genre, after notably working alongside French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve on his successful “Dune” movies, such as the upcoming installment, “Dune Messiah.”

A logline for “Gears of War” from Netflix:

“Gears of War” follows humanity’s last stand against the Locust Horde, a monstrous threat from below. Led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, a ragtag fire team known as Delta Squad is the only thing defending what’s left of society from total collapse as they face the enemy on the hostile planet Sera.

Leitch has been quickly making a name for himself within the world of action films. He first hit many people’s radars after co-directing “John Wick,” only to go solo with efforts like “Atomic Blonde,” “Deadpool 2,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” “Bullet Train,” “The Fall Guy,” and is currently on the heist thriller “How To Rob A Bank for Amazon MGM Studios.

While not officially cast in the role of Marcus Fenix, actor Dave Bautista (“Dune,” “Guardians of The Galaxy”) has been campaigning for the role for many years and was a playable character in “Gears of War 5.” Also, Bautista had chastised Netflix, which he worked with on “Army of The Dead,” for dragging their feet during an interview with ComicBook (See below). Thankfully, the age of an actor isn’t exactly a factor with Fenix, as he’s appeared much older in later sequels.

Stay tuned for further updates on “Gears of War.”
