‘Victorian Psycho’: Maika Monroe Replaces Margaret Qualley In Gothic Horror Pic

A reunion between “Sanctuary” director Zachary Wigon and Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”) has been cut short as Qualley has exited his upcoming horror flick “Victorian Psycho,” but has landed quite the replacement with “It Follows” and “Longlegs” actress Maika Monroe stepping in.

Deadline has revealed the casting switch-up as Monroe will co-star alongside Thomasin McKenzie from Edgar Wright‘s time-traveling psychological thriller “Last Night in Soho” and Taika Waititi‘s WWII-set dark comedy “Jojo Rabbit.”

Monroe has taken the role of Winifred Notty, “a young, eccentric governess, who in 1858 arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Her responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family’s history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies.”

Author Virginia Feito penned the script, which is based on her novel of the same name, and cameras are expected to begin rolling in August.

The synopsis for the original novel by Feito via Goodreads:

Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House prepared to play the perfect Victorian governess. She’ll dutifully tutor her charges, Drusilla and Andrew, tell them bedtime stories, and only joke about eating children. But the longer Winifred spends within the estate’s dreary confines and the more she learns of the perversions and pathetic preoccupations of the Pounds family, the more trouble she has sticking to her plan. Whether creeping across the moonlit lawns in her undergarments or gently tormenting the house staff, Winifred struggles at every turn to stifle the horrid compulsions of her past until her chillingly dark imagination breaches the feeble boundary of reality on Christmas morning.

Qualley wasn’t the only exit on “Victorian Psycho” as A24 has left, but sales are still moving forward at Cannes as Anton is fully financing the film and is representing international rights. Also, the U.S. rights for the horror pic are being co-represented by Anton, UTA Independent Film Group, and CAA Media Finance.

It has a producing team that consists of Dan Kagan (“Longlegs”) via production banner Traffic, Sébastien Raybaud at Anton, Wigon, and is in association with Anonymous Content. Not to mention that Nick Shumaker, Bard Dorros, and Feito are set as executive producers.
