'Ghostbusters': Bill Murray Explains Why He Cameoed In 2016's Reboot & Says He'd Show Up In The New One Too

We should all strive to be more like Bill Murray. The actor has turned a successful career as one of the best comedic actors of a generation into an incredible second life as a capital-A actor, who also sometimes steals fries from fans just because he can. And through it all, he has stayed completely honest, even brutally so. So, when he talks about the current state of “Ghostbusters” and his potential future in the series, you better believe Murray isn’t going to hold back.

Speaking at Cannes, in an interview with IndieWire, Murray was open about his love of the “Ghostbusters” franchise, particularly with the relationships (and money) made during that time and also explains why he showed up in a cameo in the controversial 2016 reboot.

“This franchise paid for my son’s college,” he said. “We made this thing. We are the caretakers of it. It’s a great thing and it was a really fun movie to make. It’s a real movie with some really funny stuff in it.”

He would go on to explain that he held up development of a third “Ghostbusters” franchise, not because of his relationships with his co-stars and filmmakers, but due to his contentious dealings with Sony. However, that didn’t prevent him from showing up in the 2016 film, which replaced the original cast with an all-female ghostbusting unit.

But according to Murray, the reason he signed up to cameo in the film was less about the content of the movie and more about the message he was sending.

Murray said, “I was in that movie just because they asked me, and I knew if I said no, I was saying I didn’t support that movie. I felt like, OK, I’m going to support them because I support them as people. So I did that one and I would do this next one.”

“This next one” is in reference to the just-announced Jason Reitman-directed reboot-quel that is set to be released in 2020. The film, which has already begun production, is said to be a continuation of the first two films. However, it’s still unclear whether or not any (or all) of the original cast will show up in the project.
