'Going Electric': Timothée Chalamet Says His Bob Dylan Biopic Is Still In The Works & Moving In A "Very Positive Direction"

Remember, January 2020? Sure, the world still felt as if it was going to fall apart, but we had no idea the COVID pandemic was just on the horizon. It was page 2 news, at best. So, when it was announced that Timothée Chalamet was signed on to play Bob Dylan in a new film by James Mangold, it was exciting news. But then, less than a year later, reports came out that “Going Electric,” the Bob Dylan biopic, was shelved due to COVID restrictions. Since then, nothing has been really known about the status of the film. Well, two years later, Chalamet is here to give us a hopeful update.

Speaking to Variety, Timothée Chalamet was asked about the current status of his Bob Dylan biopic, “Going Electric,” directed by James Mangold. And somewhat surprisingly, not only is Chalamet still hoping to get that project off the ground, he hinted that there might be some good news about the film coming sooner than later.

“I haven’t stopped preparing, which has been one of the greatest gifts for me,” Chalamet said. “It’s been a wonderful experience getting to dive into that world, whether we get to make it or not. But without giving anything away — because I don’t want to beat anyone to the punch, and obviously, things have to come together officially — the winds that are blowing are blowing in a very positive direction.”

While it is a shame the film couldn’t be made two years ago, there hasn’t been much that has changed over that time to make “Going Electric” something not very enticing for a studio. Chalamet has only become exponentially popular and has honed his craft even more. Mangold has stayed busy and is wrapping up what might be the biggest project of his career, “Indiana Jones 5.” So, you have to assume if these guys want to make this project, it can get made.

As mentioned, it still will be some time before “Going Electric” could get in front of cameras. Mangold is busy with ‘Indy,’ and Chalamet has a full slate ahead of him too, as he is still deep into production on “Dune: Part Two,” and you have to assume he has no shortage of projects in the works.

Regardless, if you’re a fan of Mangold and Chalamet and were hoping “Going Electric” would still get made, then you seem to be in luck. At least, for now.
