Guillermo Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon & More Explain Why The Quibi Streaming Service Is The “Next Evolution Of Entertainment”

Even the casual fan of streaming entertainment has probably heard of the impending launches of HBO Max and Peacock. And at the end of last year, we saw the highly-publicized debuts of Apple TV+ and Disney+, joining the Streaming Wars that are already being fought by Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and many more. Needless to say, it’s a crowded industry. But yet, flying under the radar in the first half of 2020 is the debut of Quibi, and this is a streaming service that might interest those looking for something different. Very different.

As seen in a new trailer for the service, Quibi (short for “Quick Bites”) is a streaming service that is targeting those people looking to consume high-quality content while on the go, with just the phone in their pocket. To best enjoy Quibi, you don’t need a big TV and a great sound system with an Apple TV or Chromecast attached. All you need is your phone. In fact, the ONLY way to watch Quibi is on your mobile device. Confused? Allow Guillermo del Toro, Peter Farrelly, Antoine Fuqua, Catherine Hardwicke, and Reese Witherspoon explain in the video below.

Basically, Quibi is a service (with two different costs — ad-supported at $4.99 per month and ad-free at $7.99 per month) that will have a ton of original content, split into 10-minute chapters (thus “quick bites”), that is shot in a way that is meant to be consumed on your phone, either horizontally or vertically. And if you think Quibi is doing this so that it saves money on productions, you’re wrong. The service is formatted in this way to appeal to people on the go, who don’t have an hour to watch an episode of TV or 2 hours to watch a film.

Also, Quibi is following the Apple TV+ method of bringing some of the best creators around to help launch its service, with the aforementioned filmmakers.

We’ve been covering Quibi for quite a while now, as the service has ramped up production in time for its April 6 launch date, and even if we’re not completely convinced this is the “next evolution of entertainment,” the service definitely has caught our attention.
