Jake Gyllenhaal Reportedly Producing & Starring In A Film Adaptation Of Alison Bechdel's 'Fun Home'

Is there an actor making more interesting career choices currently than Jake Gyllenhaal? Just look at the work he’s turned in over the past two years, with roles in “Wildlife,” “The Sisters Brothers,” “Velvet Buzzsaw,” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Let’s also not forget his scene-stealing appearance in John Mulaney’s latest Netflix special. And it appears that 2020 is going to continue that trend of interesting choices, including production on a film version of the popular graphic-novel-turned-musical, “Fun Home.”

According to the Daily Mail, Gyllenhaal is going to co-produce and star in a film adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic novel, which was also turned into a Tony Award-winning musical of the same name, “Fun Home.” The film, like the source material, will tell the true story of Bechdel’s home life, including her relationship with her father, a part-time English teacher and a funeral home owner. As you might expect, if the film gets made, Gyllenhaal is expected to play the role of Bechdel’s father.

As mentioned, Gyllenhaal has turned in some memorable performances over the last several films, proving that he’s not only one of the most talented actors working today but also one of the more well-rounded and brave talents. Honestly, even if you skip the first three-quarters of “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch,” you really should watch the last part with Gyllenhaal portraying Mr. Music. It’s hilarious, odd, and fairly creepy. But yet, perfectly fitting for a children’s show.

The plan is for “Fun Home” to begin production sometime towards the end of 2020, with Sam Gold attached to direct. Gold is also the person who helmed the acclaimed stage production. One thing of note is how the report doesn’t fully say that the film will be a musical. With Gold attached, it could be assumed that the music from the stage production will play a role in the film, however, there is the chance that the film will be a straight-up adaptation of the graphic novel.

Either way, the story is incredible and could be something special for Gyllenhaal and all involved.
