With James Gunn‘s “Superman” reboot gearing up for release on July 11, the filmmaker who doubles as co-CEO of DC Studios is in a very unique position during the film’s promotional tour to dish on the status of a range of other DCU projects, both film and television.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn hints at an indirect follow-up to “Superman” being in development (that he’s considering directing himself) and dispels reports that their “Sgt. Rock” movie is dead after director Luca Guadagnino exited.
When the subject of a “Superman” sequel was brought up, Gunn responded with, “What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily…Well, I always leave saying I’m going to direct something till I’m actually done with the screenplay, and then I say, ‘Yeah, I want to do this.’ But it’s probably what I will direct. Yeah, probably, to be totally realistic. Yes, probably.”

Gunn, taking it upon himself to act as rumor-control online and in interviews, alludes to “Sgt. Rock” simply being delayed, rather than being scrapped entirely.
“I feel like we’re in a pretty good place. We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be…What would Peter want me to say here? So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit,” Gunn coyly told EW of the current status of “Sgt. Rock.”
The feature is said to be starring Colin Farrell (Arnold Schwarzenegger was once attached in the 1980s), who also plays Gotham underworld villain Oz Cobb in “The Batman” films and the HBO series “The Penguin,” but is currently without a director or production start after previously targeting a summer shoot.
Lastly, when directly asked about resurrecting Guillmero del Toro‘s “Justice League Dark,” Gunn didn’t sound like the director has expressed any real interest in reviving that horror-focused DC project anytime soon, along with mentioning Steven Spielberg‘s WWII movie “Blackhawks” being a similar situation.
“And I love Guillermo, and we own a movie theater together. By the way, Guillermo’s never said that to me. I hear all these things about, ‘Guillermo would love to do Justice League Dark.’ Well, Guillermo’s never said that to me. ‘Just let Steven Spielberg do his Blackhawks movie that he wants to do!’ Steven Spielberg, who I love above anyone else, has never said that to me. So these things get blown out of proportion,” Gunn said of other long-dead DC movies.
Most recently, Gunn said that a new “Wonder Woman” movie is being developed by an unnamed screenwriter. Something I’m sure fans are dying to know more about.
So, with Superman and Supergirl in the bag, Diana Prince on the horizon, a new actor playing Batman for “The Brave & The Bold,” and the introduction of Aaron Pierre‘s John Stewart with the HBO series “Lanterns,” it certainly feels like Gunn is building up to some “Justice League” type event. Only time will tell, though.
