James Wan Working On 'Swamp Thing' TV Series For DC's Streaming Service

It looks like Warner Bros. and DC are willing to go back to the swamp for another shot at the superhero Swamp Thing.

According to a report, Warner Bros. is working on a brand new “Swamp Thing” television series for their upcoming streaming service, now-titled DC Universe. The series will be executive produced by horror director James Wan, and written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman.

The series will follow Abby Arcane, who moves back to her childhood home in Louisiana, where she begins investigating a swamp-borne virus. There, she meets and falls in love with scientist Alec Holland, who is tragically killed. But don’t worry, Holland then resurfaces as the beloved Swamp Thing, as Arcane discovers the swamp holds some mystical secrets.

Wan, of course, is the man behind hits like “Saw,” “Insidious” and “The Conjuring.” He’s also not a stranger to the world of DC superheroes, as he’s currently working on the upcoming film, “Aquaman.” Verheiden has a long history with genre TV, working on “Ash Vs. The Evil Dead,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and a superhero show of his own, Netflix’sDaredevil.” Dauberman is probably best known for co-writing the horror hit of last year, “It.”

With talent like that, perhaps WB can revive a property that has had a few…interesting adaptations. First, as feature films, with the first being directed by Wes Craven. While the original “Swamp Thing” film is a cult classic, the low-budget sequel “The Return of Swamp Thing” is pure garbage. After those films, the character was part of an ill-advised ‘80s cartoon series that was equally bad. However, the character has a strong, decades-long history in the DC universe.

Perhaps Wan, Verheiden, and Dauberman are just the guys who will be able to honor Len Wein’s classic horror creation with a quality television series. Because Lord knows, it can go very, very wrong.
