Wow, we weren’t expecting any real big Muppet news on the theatrical front. But actress Jennifer Lawrence (“Die My Love”) has just revealed that she’ll be working with fellow Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone (“Bugonia”) and recent Tony-winner Cole Escola (“One Piece,” “Oh, Mary!”) on a new “Miss Piggy” movie for Walt Disney Studios, with the latter taking on screenwriting duties. The iconic “Muppets” character was created in the 1970s by Bonnie Erickson and Frank Oz (being the original voice of the beloved character from 1976 to 2002).
That blindsiding tidbit was recently shared by Lawrence on a podcast (via Variety) while promoting her latest release, “Die My Love,” from director Lynne Ramsay and co-starring with Robert Pattinson.

“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I am just going to…Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence dished on the “Las Culturistas” podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. When directly asked by the duo if Lawrence and Stone would take acting roles in this newly announced “Miss Piggy” movie, she responded with, “I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
It’s been over a decade since The Muppets (the first movie debuted in 1979) graced the big screen after their most recent show (inspired by “The Office“) on ABC ended back in 2016 after a single season and we haven’t seen a feature film since the Disney merger with 21st Century Fox, as “Muppets Most Wanted” was the last big hurrah back in 2014 and the 2011 installment “The Muppets” featured Jason Segal and Amy Adams in lead human roles (James Bobin directed both those modern installments).
Miss Piggy is notably a fashionista with a short temper and loves the glamour and spotlight of Hollywood celebrity culture, making her one of the more bombastic characters that should make a great central Muppet character to focus on. We’ll see if Kermit and the crew will be along for the ride or simply taking a backseat in this Piggy-centric story.
With Lawrence and Stone attached, we wouldn’t be all that shocked if they enlist the help of Hollywood pals to contribute with various cameos and supporting roles, but it certainly sounds like we might finally see the two actresses making a movie together where they get to share screentime.
