Jude Law Talks Steven Soderbergh's 'Contagion' And 'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel

Jude Law has taken the opportunity on the “Repo Men” press tour to discuss his upcoming role in Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” as well as a sequel to last Christmas’ “Sherlock Holmes.”

“‘Contagion’ is not until the end of the year and I’m one of a large number of people in a big ensemble,” Law reveals. “So I’m doing like 10 days on that, in San Francisco, I think. Well, the subject matter is really interesting, it’s very current. It’s about a contagious disease spreading across the world and how it affects different elements. Be it the public, the medical services, the emergency services, politicians. I play someone online, a blogger, who is kind of a fearmonger. And I just like the part, I really like the part, and I just love Steven Soderbergh films. I think he’s a great talent.”

It’s an interesting role for Law, and as he mentioned, the film already has Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow set to star with Laurence Fishburne in talks for a role as well. The script comes from Scott Z. Burns who also wrote Soderbergh’s “The Informant!” and the film was picked up by Warner Bros. at the European Film Market after Soderbergh lined up the cast and shopped the project around town.

On ‘Holmes’ meanwhile, Law noted that he hasn’t “been given the absolute [start date]… it’s not like next week but I think it’s sometime this year is what I get.”

“[The ‘Holmes’ cast and crew] got on very well, and we were also very aware that we had a hell of a lot more material to use. [Arthur Conan Doyle] wrote over 15 books, and there was so much to take from. Because of our enthusiasm for the project, once we knew it was doing well financially, we all started throwing in our ideas of where it could go and what should happen next.”

Law had been in a bit of a lull before “Sherlock Holmes” but things certainly look on the up for him now. He also recently put in a critically acclaimed performance as the titular character in a West End production of “Hamlet.” “Repo Men” opens on March 19th.
