The Farrelly Brothers Are Reportedly Developing A Sequel To 'Kingpin'

With their debut feature film, “Dumb and Dumber,” the Farrelly Brothers exploded on the film scene, establishing themselves as silly, but hilarious filmmakers that know how to bring a truly ridiculous story to an audience with heart and plenty of fart jokes. Then sandwiched between “Dumb and Dumber” and their massive hit, “There’s Something About Mary,” sits “Kingpin,” which is a really odd comedy film with a masterclass performance from Bill Murray. However, because of the films that bookend it, “Kingpin” doesn’t get the same level of appreciation as the other two features but is still considered a cult classic. Well, 26 years after the 1996 debut of “Kingpin,” it appears a sequel is in the works.

According to Collider, the Farrelly Brothers are in early development on a sequel film to “Kingpin.” It’s unclear if there are going to be actors returning such as Murray and/or Woody Harrelson. And the report claims a script hasn’t even been written. But the comedy duo is actively developing a return to the world of “Kingpin,” which is enough for many film fans to get excited about.

“Kingpin,” as the title implies, revolves around a cast of strange characters that are obsessed with bowling. An ex-professional bowler (Harrelson) that is well past his prime takes on the role as manager and mentor for an Amish unknown bowler (Randy Quaid), as they both take on rival bowler, Ernie “Big Ern” McCracken (Murray). Again, it’s unclear if any of these folks will return to the film, but you have to imagine either Murray and/or Harrelson will, as both are vital parts of the story and world of “Kingpin.”

Since the 1996 comedy film was released, the Farrelly Brothers went on to become even bigger filmmakers with ‘Mary,’ “Me Myself and Irene,” and “Shallow Hal.” Most recently, Peter Farrelly broke off from his brother to work on the Oscar-winning drama, “Green Book.” He’s also working on a new feature, “The Greatest Beer Run,” for Apple TV+.

Obviously, since “Kingpin 2” is in early, early development, it’s unclear if the film will ever come to be or when it might hit theaters and/or streaming. But for those hoping to see more bowling action from the Farrelly Brothers, your wish might actually come true.
