“Task” fans already knew a new season of Brad Ingelsby‘s crime show was on the way via HBO content chairman Casey Bloys‘ announcement last month. Now, Deadline reports that Ingelsby’s other hit HBO show (and another one meant to be a one-off limited series), “Mare Of Easttown,” may also get a second season, and the tease comes from the show’s star, Kate Winslet.

Winslet talked about the future of “Mare Of Easttown” in a new interview with Baz Bamigboye, and talk of a potential S2, which the actress said started last summer, came as a minor surprise. After all, the arc of Mare Sheehan, a fourth-generation small town police sergeant detective operating out of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was more or less complete when the hit limited series culminated in 2021. “It was done and dusted, finished,” Winslet said of the show, but then chatter of a new season in June 2025, when the actress was editing her feature directorial debut, “Goodbye June,” in London. “They were proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible,” Winslet continued. “And so I think we probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that.”
So what timeframe did she discuss with the show’s other top creative voices, Ingelsby and director Craig Zobel? Winslet was cautious enough to say that it “wouldn’t actually be this year, I reckon it would end up being 2027 to film it. There’s a strong likelihood it would film sometime in 2027.” The actress also refused to confirm the new season was a done deal, however, and shied away from revealing any potential plot details. However, earlier comments of Winslet to Bamigboye apply here, when she told him that she and Ingelsby will “only do it again if the story’s compelling enough.”
“Mare Of Easttown” ended up a smash hit for HBO, Winslet, and Ingelsby back in 2021. Winslet won an Emmy award for Best Lead Actress for her role, while co-stars Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters also won Emmys for their supporting roles. The series also starred Jean Smart as Mare’s mother, and Angourie Rice.
But the bigger question here is if Winslet’s Mare Sheehan will cross paths with “Task” hero, FBI Agent Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo has already confirmed that both shows exist in the same fictional universe, so, of course, fans have suggested future seasons could converge somehow. However, the actor also confirmed that “nothing’s set” for a crossover, at least at the time of the January 2024 interview. Maybe things have changed since then?
Or maybe things are still wide open, or hinge on whether or not “Task” has similar Emmy success to “Mare Of Easttown” later this year. But for now, mark your calendars, HBO subscribers: Winslet’s return to the network is imminent, and any time that happens, there are rave reviews and multiple award wins.
