HBO Renews ‘Task,’ ‘The Chair Company’ & ‘I Love LA’ For New Seasons, ‘House Of The Dragon’ For Season 4

HBO likes what they have in three of their latest new shows. At a NYC press presentation today, HBO and HBO Max Content chairman Casey Bloys announced that “Task,” “The Chair Company,” and “I Love LA” would all get renewed for second seasons. Oh, and “House Of The Dragon” will be back, too, as that show was also renewed for a fourth season ahead of Season 3’s premiere next summer.

Perhaps the biggest story here is Brad Ingelsby‘s “Task.” The show premiered as a standalone miniseries with no plans for further seasons, but word of mouth among viewers convinced HBO to reconsider. According to THR, “Task” is one of the network’s fastest-growing debuts ever, with 4 million viewers tuning in for the series finale when it premiered on October 19, and 11.2 million total viewers since then. High critical marks for the series don’t hurt either, so expanding “Task” makes a lot of sense, because it’s clear HBO has a winner. Maybe Season 2 incorporates the world of “Mare Of Easttown,” Ingelsby’s previous standalone hit, with “Task”? A Mark RuffaloKate Winslet team-up sounds like a no-brainer.

The renewal of “I Love LA” comes more as a surprise, as the show is only three episodes into its first season. The numbers for those three episodes are quite good, however. Deadline reports that the HBO Max comedy about young hipsters in the City of Angels averages 2 million viewers per episode across HBO and streaming. Rachel Sennott‘s rising star power is likely a factor in the renewal, too. The creator, star, writer, and executive producer of “I Love LA” will only become more influential after The Momentand The Heidi Fleiss Story,” both of which may bow next year. “I Love LA” isn’t “Girls” for Generation Z, though; audience scores for the show are more mixed than “Task,” and critically, it’s not as beloved (The Playlist’s review gave the show a C rating).

On the other hand, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin‘s “The Chair Company” boasts a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and, per Variety, averages 3.3 million viewers per episode. The workplace cringe comedy has two episodes left in its first season. Here’s a statement from HBO & HBO Max comedy head and HBO programming exec VP Amy Gravitt on renewing the two comedies: “Both shows confidently carry on the HBO comedy tradition, in their own singular way. We couldn’t be happier to continue collaborating with Tim, Zach, Rachel, and their exceptional teams.”

As for “House Of The Dragon,” its renewal should come as no surprise, as showrunner Ryan Condal previously stated that the show would end after Season 4. However, Deadline reports that those initial plans may be up in the air. Sources tell the outlet that Condal is still writing S4 and won’t make a final decision about the show’s future until he completes it. And HBO is banking on their next “Game Of Thrones” spinoff, “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms,” to be a big hit too. Deadline reports that Bloys also announced the show will be renewed for a second season ahead of its January 19, 2026, Season 1 premiere.
