Margot Robbie Wants Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy's Queer Romance On The Big Screen Someday

With all the shake-ups at DC Studios right now, it’s hard to tell what the future holds in the DCU. And it’s probably too early to tell at this point too.  James Gunn and Peter Safran have only been in their new jobs as studio co-heads for a month, with scrapped movies and recasting rumors galore. The only certainty is that DC fans will get a confirmed plan in due time, but not anytime soon.

But whatever the future holds for the DCU, Margot Robbie wants it to involve Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy making out. Yup, Vanity Fair (via ComicBook.com) reports that Robbie wants to see the queer romance between the two supervillains in the comics and the HBO Max animated series to make it to the big screen someday. “I have been pushing for that for years,” she said during the interview. “I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too.” But Robbie doesn’t have any ideas on who should play Ivy to her Quinn. ““Honestly… I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics,” continued Robbie. “I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it.”

Of course, it’s unclear if Robbie’s time as the psychiatrist-turned-psycho killer will continue. She’s played Harley Quinn three times now: in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” 2020’s “Birds Of Prey,” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.” However, Lady Gaga reimagines the role in the upcoming “Joker” sequel “Joker: Folie á Deux” with Joaquin Phoenix. Robbie is more than happy to share the role with Lady Gaga, though. “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way…like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” the actress said to MTV News in October. “Someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth.”

Expect Lady Gaga’s turn as Quinn to be darker and more garish than Robbie’s, but that’s what different renditions of the same character are all about. Robbie continued, “I feel like, in not so many cases, are there female characters — Queen Elizabeth I…which I got to have a crack at as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.’ It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think [Gaga] will do something incredible with it.”

As for a dream Poison Ivy casting? That’s a hard call to make.  Uma Thurman‘s turn as the villainess in 1997’s “Batman & Robin” wouldn’t resonate as well with today’s audiences. Plus, consider Ivy’s portrayal on HBO Max’s “Harley Quinn“: grounded, introverted, but no less deadly than Quinn. In another world, a young Eva Green may be perfect casting, but in the contemporary Hollywood zeitgeist, let’s settle for Lily Collins or maybe Emma Watson vamping it up. Other recommendations welcome.
