When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and laid out their vision for the future of the new DCU, they announced plans for a new Batman feature titled “The Brave and the Bold.” This would be in addition to what Matt Reeves is making with his “The Batman” franchise. Basically, Reeves will have the freedom to do whatever he wants, and Gunn and Co. will have their own Batman to use in the DCU. Sure, it might confuse the general public, but that’s the plan that was announced. But now that there is seemingly delays on “The Brave and the Bold,” perhaps Gunn would want Reeves’ “The Batman” franchise to integrate with the DCU?

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Golden Globes red carpet, Matt Reeves was asked about the idea of his Batman getting integrated into the greater DCU. While he didn’t confirm that was going to happen, he didn’t deny it either, leaving open the possibility for it to actually happen.
“It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” said Reeves. “What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now… I don’t know, we’ll have to see where that goes.”

Of course, this could all just be mindless speculation given that Gunn has previously said that “The Batman” is an Elseworlds franchise, meaning it is outside of the current DCU continuity. And there’s also the fact that Robert Pattinson, who plays Reeves’ Batman, might not be okay with the idea of interacting with Superman, the Green Lanterns, and various other fantastical DC superheroes. All that to say, there are more things pointing in the direction of this not happening than it actually becoming a real thing.
That said, it could very well work. Reeves has already established his version of Batman and Gotham City. And people seem really enthusiastic about both. Hell, “The Penguin” just won Colin Farrell a Golden Globe. If there really are issues with “The Brave and the Bold,” then why not explore the option of making “The Batman” work in the DCU? The beauty of comic books and shared universes is that you can have a grounded, dark, bleak ‘Batman’ franchise exist in the same world as a hopeful, colorful “Superman.” Both can exist and both can eventually interact with each other.
We’ll just have to wait and see what’s going to happen. Odds are, it’s all just speculation and not really going to be a thing. But it’s fun to imagine, right?
