Let's Go On Summer Vacation With 'Midsommar' & 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' [The Discourse Podcast]

Drink the water and frolic with us in Sweden on the latest episode of The Discourse, the show where we discuss film and television news, reviews, and any other pop culture items in the zeitgeist that we feel the need to weigh-in on.

This week, I’m joined by Jenny Nulf (Director of Programming, Austin Asian American Film Festival & Co-Host of No Excuses) to dedicate the bulk of our discussion to “Midsommar,” the latest film from “Hereditary” filmmaker Ari Aster. Anticipation was high for Aster’s follow-up to his acclaimed breakout hit (still the highest-grossing film in A24’s history), and while we are both positive on the film, we’re not ready to hail it as a “horror masterpiece,” either. We get into our non-spoiler and spoilery thoughts (and given plenty of warning for when we pivot to the latter) on why it’s completely okay to think that a movie is just plain “good.”

While we spend most of the episode discussing “Midsommar,” we do find the time, in the beginning, to dive a little bit into “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” the sequel to 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the 23rd film overall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We get into our overall exhaustion with these movies, while admitting that it is mostly an enjoyable romp.
