'Midway' Trailer: Roland Emmerich’s Enlists A Jonas Brother As A Fighter Pilot To Help Win WWII

Director Roland Emmerich’s war epic “Midway” takes audiences into one of the most decisive battles of World War II. Despite initial production delays due to a failed deal with Sony, Emmerich is finally able to make his “Midway” movie, featuring a star-studded cast and a $100 million budget.

This is definitely not the first film about the Battle of Midway, a pivotal naval battle in World War II. The original “Midway” was released in 1976 and uses a good deal of stock footage from war documentaries. Given the budget for this film, as well as Emmerich’s involvement, audiences can imagine the 2019 version will be much flashier.

Emmerich is best known for having directed several war films like “Independence Day,” “The Patriot,” and “White House Down.” He is also known for disaster films, such as “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow.” Given Emmerich’s filmography and the film’s substantial budget, we can expect lots of explosions and American exceptionalism. But hey, what else would you expect from the director?

Aside from the battle by which the film gets its name, “Midway” will also include the attack on Pearl Harbor. We hope that this film won’t bear many similarities to Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor,” but given Emmerich and Bay’s shared love of big explosions, this seems all too likely.

The cast will play a large role in making “Midway” more than just another generic war movie. The film stars Ed Skrein (“Game of Thrones,” “Deadpool”) as Navy pilot Dick Best. The cast also includes Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, and many others.

Given the political climate in the US, the film’s depiction of the battle will be interesting. This will be especially true of its portrayal of Japanese characters. Either way, if “Midway” wants to emerge as a memorable war film, the battle is just beginning.
