Got a Tip?

Neill Blomkamp Says He Wouldn’t Be The Right Director For A ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Star Wars” may be in the hands of J.J. Abrams now, but what will happen in the not-so-far-away future?  After all, will Abrams direct an entire trilogy? What about the spin-off films that are in the works?  Who will direct those ones? Just when you thought the fan speculation had been struck down, it’s become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.  One of the most mentioned directors when it comes to “Star Wars” is Neill BlomkampIGN recently caught up with him to test the “Star Wars” waters again and he revealed why he would not want to be a part of the legacy.

Blomkamp is no stranger to sci-fi and given his penchant for effects that look gritty and realistic; his artistic style would seem to match up well with the original trilogy’s aesthetics. However, while talking with IGN about his upcoming film “Elysium”, Blomkamp discussed briefly why he wouldn’t want to touch the George Lucas franchise. “I love ‘Star Wars.’ I really, really love ‘Star Wars.’ But I’m not the right guy. And also, just taking ideas that already exist in Hollywood is just not for me.”

Don’t worry though; if you like Blomkamp’s approach to sci-fi there’s still more to come.  As soon as he’s finished with “Elysium” he’ll be moving on to his sci-fi comedy “Chappie” and then there’s the often rumored sequel to “District 9” that he wants to get back too.  While we’d love to see his vision of “Star Wars,” new and inventive genre films are a fair trade off.

“Elysium” hits theaters on August 9th, 2013.
