New Trailer For ‘The Emoji Movie’ Goes Inside Your Phone

One of the strangest new stories to really pick up traction this spring has been T.J. Miller‘s exit from “Silicon Valley.” The comic actor has been on a weirdly involved press tour to explain why he left the hit show, and the main reason is that he wanted more time to pursue other gigs….like “The Emoji Movie.”

“They came to me and said, ‘Look, we’re not going to pick up your contingency because we want to offer you doing five episodes out of the 10, or three episodes.’ And then I said, ‘Oh perfect, I had been wanting to ask if you guys would be open to me leaving the show.’ And then they suddenly said, ‘Wait, no, what? You can do whatever. What? What do you mean?’ And that was so good of them,” Miller told THR. “They said, ‘We just wanted you to have more time to do all of the things you’re doing.’ And I said, ‘Well, the best way for me to be involved in the show is by no longer being on it.’ I swear to God, that’s why the internet broke. Everybody was like, ‘What the f— are you talking about? You’re on this successful show. Don’t you want three more years of solid acting work and don’t you want to be a famous television actor?’ And I was like, ‘No, not really.’ I’d like to parasail into the Cannes Film Festival for ‘The Emoji Movie’ because that’s the next new funny thing that will make people laugh.”

I’m not sure anyone even remembers that Miller parasailed into Cannes for “The Emoji Movie,” but it seems the actor really relished that marketing stunt. As for the animated film, it will finally give us all the story about what’s inside our smartphones. Here’s the official synopsis:

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

“The Emoji Movie” opens on August 4th.
