Stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser and comedy guru/historian Judd Apatow are linking up for a new untitled studio comedy (remember those?) that is being set up at Universal Pictures, where the filmmaker and producer has made his home for decades.
This new movie project revealed by trades such as Deadline is described as an “edgy” romantic comedy, which could be used to describe most of the output from Apatow over the years, with projects such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” “Funny People,” “This Is 40,” “Trainwreck,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and the Netflix series “Love.”

Glaser has made a name for herself in the world of comedy with razor-sharp roast jokes during the Comedy Central celebrity roasts (a tradition where tasteless jokes are purposefully crafted for shock value are exchanged between celebs and comedians alike) and multiple stand-up specials.
The pairing shouldn’t be terribly shocking, as Apatow has a history of lining up projects that have comedians co-writing and starring in projects. One of the more recent examples of that would be with the Amy Schumer comedic vehicle “Trainwreck,” in which Glaser had a role. Her connections with Schumer go back to her show “Inside Amy Schumer” and also appeared in her 2018 movie, “I Feel Pretty.”
The two are expected to hammer out a script together, as has been the case with previous collaborations Apatow has made with other comedic actors. They are working on the movie alongside writer Sean O’Connor, a veteran comedy writer who wrote jokes for Nikki Glaser during her hosting duties at the recent Golden Globes. O’Connor’s other credits include the Hulu animated series “Solar Opposites,” “A Little Late with Lilly Singh,” “Lights Out with David Spade,” Netflix’s animated family comedy “Close Enough,” “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” and also worked with Norm McDonald on two of his shows.
Some of the other names that Apatow has worked with and mentored over the years, before becoming high-profile names, are Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Pete Davidson.
