Aaron Sorkin‘s follow-up to his acclaimed social media dramedy “The Social Network” has added another four names to the call sheet. Coming from Sony Pictures next year, “The Social Reckoning” takes place 17 years after the events of the David Fincher-directed pic, penned by Sorkin, as the previous movie followed the origins and legal drama surrounding the creation of Facebook.
The casting update hails from Deadline as they revealed Billy Magnussen (“Date Night,” “No Time To Die”), Betty Gilpin (“GLOW,” “The Hunt”), Gbenga Akinnagbe (“A House of Dynimate,” “The Old Man”), and Canadian Inuk actress Anna Lambe (“North of North,” “True Detective: Night Country”) have taken undisclosed roles.

Others already announced for project include Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear,” “Stringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere”), Jeremy Strong as Facebook co-found/CEO Mark Zuckerberg (“Succession,” “The Apprentice”), Bill Burr (“The Mandalorian,” “King of Staten Island”), and Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners,” “Loki”).
There is an expectation that the film will tackle Facebook’s seedy internal practices, the spread of false information on the platform, the impact on teen mental health, and the social media app’s connection to the January 6 Capitol Insurrection incited by President Trump to stop the 2020 election results from being made official.
Instead of returning to Zuckerberg’s perspective or catching up with characters from the previous isntallment, “The Social Reckoning” tells the story of Facebook engineer “Frances Haugen (Madison), “who enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”
“Molly’s Game,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Being the Ricardos” were Sorkin’s previous directing efforts, as the filmmaker is mostly known for his strong writing talents on television shows like “The West Wing” and HBO‘s “The Newsroom” along with previous scripts for “Steve Jobs,” “Moneyball,” and “A Few Good Men.”
We won’t have to wait too long for the pic, as Sony has already set the release for “The Social Reckoning” on October 9, 2026.
