“Painter,” a new father-daughter action thriller written by “John Wick” creator Derek Kolstad and executive produced by James Cameron, has landed some decent acting talent to lead roles as the pic has landed at 20th Century Studios after previously going to auction at the American Film Market last fall.
Not only will on-the-rise actress Amber Midthunder (“Prey,” “Opus”) star as the film’s main heroine, but THR reveals that we will see the very in-demand Walton Goggins (“The White Lotus,” “Fallout”) co-star after he replaced Alan Ritchson (“Reacher”) when the hulking actor had to exit “Painter” over scheduling issues. Goggins is set to play the father of Midthunder’s well-trained character, who is kidnapped, kicking off the film’s premise as she attempts to rescue her father.

Garrett Warren is set to direct, a veteran stunt coordinator who previously tackled projects like James Mangold‘s gritty Wolverine flick “Logan” and the recent Doug Liman remake of “Road House.” He has an established relationship with Cameron after working on two of the “Avatar” films, and we’ve seen some promising action fare from directors with steep stunt backgrounds, so this feels like a great fit.
Cameron isn’t a stranger to being a producer, as he was behind Steven Soderbergh‘s 2002 remake of “Solaris” starring George Clooney, and for decades was trying to get “The Fantastic Voyage” together (Guillermo del Toro was one of many directors attached to the sci-fi adventure remake) at 20th Century. More recently, he was creatively involved and produced tentpole sci-fi movies like “Alita: Battle Angel” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.”
Others among the film’s producing team include Drew Simon and Sam Speiser of FilmNation’s production banner Infrared Pictures, Kolstad, Josh Adler (Kolstad’s manager), and J.R. Young is set to oversee the action thriller on behalf of 20th Century.
We’ll be curious to see if they’ll be aiming to get other heavyweights like Goggins for the supporting cast of “Painter.”
