In the beloved NBC sitcom “Seinfeld,” Jerry Seinfeld often displayed his genuine obsession with breakfast food. A rotating collection of cereals can be seen in almost every episode in Jerry’s kitchen set, and his character is constantly seen eating cereal throughout the day. Seinfeld’s obsessive love for breakfast brands has endured over the decades, so much so that it’ll be the subject of his film directorial debut out on Netflix later this year.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the comedian will direct “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” which explores the rivalry between Post and Kellogg’s, the cereal industry’s two giants, as the pop tart’s development shakes up the breakfast food world.
A movie about pop tarts? Who’d want to star in that? A lot of very talented people, apparently. Seinfeld culls an impressive cast for the flick that includes Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Tom Lennon, Adrian Martinez, Bobby Moynihan, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, and Sarah Cooper.
Here’s a synopsis for the comedy, set in 1960s Michigan:
“Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen.”
Seinfeld co-writes the “Unfrosted” script with Spike Feresten, Andy Robin, and Barry Marder. He also has a small role in the film. “Unfrosted” is Seinfeld’s latest project for Netflix, after multiple stand-up specials and his series, “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.”
“Unfrosted” certainly sounds like it could be in the vein of Michael Keaton’s fast food pic “The Founder.” However, it’s unclear how grounded, or serious Seinfeld’s story will be, especially given the volume of comedic talent in the ensemble cast. Still, this movie about breakfast food is a lot more intriguing than it arguably should be, thanks to Seinfeld’s involvement. Expect “Unfrosted” to hit Netflix sometime in 2023.
