Rihanna Documentary From Director Peter Berg To Premiere Before End Of Year

It’s been a few years since we heard anything about Peter Berg’s documentary about superstar musician-actress Rihanna. Back in 2015, Berg said that he was working on the project and likened his documentary to the classic Bob Dylan film “Dont Look Back.” To say that was a lofty goal is an understatement, as the Dylan doc is often regarded as one of the best docs of all time.

But now, three years later, it appears that Berg’s work is almost complete and could be unveiled to the world before the end of the year. In a new interview on radio station Hot 97, Berg said this about the doc:

“I think [Rihanna’s] an extraordinary young woman and it really is kind of a pretty comprehensive profile of what goes in to making her this talent that she is. The work ethic, the talent, luck, the hustle, the vision. She’s a really, really interesting woman and the movie will be out in about a month and half, two months we’ll be able to start showing it.”

If Peter Berg doesn’t strike you as the obvious choice to make a film about singer Rihanna, you probably forgot about their 2012 collaboration, “Battleship.” And if you forgot about it, you’re completely forgiven, as the film is one of the bigger box office bombs in recent memory, and had the distinction of releasing right after the first “Avengers” film, which sealed its fate. However, that collaboration led to a friendship and a desire from Berg to turn Rihanna’s life story into a documentary, showcasing her childhood leading up to her current superstar status.

Rihanna has appeared recently in a variety of films, including last year’s “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” and the recent hit “Ocean’s 8.” Oh yeah, and she’s also a chart-topping singer.

The real question is whether or not the film is going to be any good. Berg is not a filmmaker that has been attached to many quality projects in recent years, and particularly is known for his jingoistic action films, and not so much his intimate documentaries. But it appears we’ll find out the answer to that question soon enough.
