Samuel L. Jackson Didn't Know About the 'Split'/'Unbreakable' Connection Until He Saw The Film

Actor Samuel L. Jackson finds himself starring in some of the most highly-anticipated films over the next year. Just this weekend, he lent his voice to the massive kid’s film “Incredibles 2,” returning as the hero known as Frozone. However, that’s not all the superhero work he’s got coming up. He returns to the iconic role of Nick Fury in next year’s “Captain Marvel.” But perhaps most exciting is his return to the “Unbreakable” universe in the upcoming film “Glass.”

But according to Jackson, he didn’t realize “Glass” was even on the horizon. Like the fans who walked out of “Split” with jaws on the ground, the actor didn’t know the thriller was an “Unbreakable” sequel until he saw it for the first time. That’s when he realized that almost two decades later, he’d return to one of his more underrated characters.

“I remember when Night called me last year to say, ‘I need you to watch this movie I just made, and after you watch it, I’ll tell you what I’m thinking.’ So I watched ‘Split,’ and at the end of it, we get Bruce in the café and the woman talks to him about Mr. Glass. I was like, ‘So are we gonna make this movie?’ And Night says, ‘Well, it depends on the opening weekend,’” said Jackson, in an interview with Vulture.

Night, of course, refers to the filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, who wrote and directed the aforementioned “Unbreakable,” “Split,” and the upcoming trilogy-ending “Glass.” It appears that Shyamalan was so adamant about keeping his grand plan a secret, that he didn’t even tell one of the main actors involved. However, once “Split” went on to be a box office hit, the upcoming sequel was inevitable.

Not much is currently known about “Glass,” other than the film is going to unite the characters from “Unbreakable” and “Split” into a film that looks to be the first actual superhero film in the trilogy of pseudo-superhero films. Bruce Willis returns as his character David Dunn, along with James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy from “Split.”

“Glass” is scheduled to hit theaters January 18.
