'Señorita 89' Teaser Trailer: Beauty Pageants Are Hell In A New Pablo Larrain-Produced Series

This year, Pablo Larrain released not one, but two high-profile projects, including the Apple TV+ series “Lisey’s Story” and the feature, “Spencer.” So, as the filmmaker waits to see if the latter brings him some expected awards recognition, 2022 is kicking off with another project from Larrain, the upcoming series “Señorita 89.” Though, the filmmaker serves only as a producer on the new Spanish-language streaming series.

As seen in the trailer for “​​Señorita 89,” the drama series tells the story of an incredibly important beauty pageant during the glamorous ‘80s Mexico. The series follows a wealthy woman who brings 32 women to her estate for an intense three-month training session to see if they have what it takes to win the Miss Mexico pageant.

As mentioned, the new drama series comes from producer Pablo Larrain alongside Juan de Dios Larrain, as well as studios such as Fabula, Pantaya, Starzplay, and Fremantle. “Señorita 89” is written and directed by Lucia Puenzo, a filmmaker best known for her work on the recent series such as “La Juaria” and “Cromo.”

“Señorita 89” debuts on the Spanish-language streaming platform, Pantaya, on February 27, 2022. You can watch the first trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

“Señorita 89” is a sophisticated dramatic thriller from visionary Lucia Puenzo (La Jauria), is set in the glamour of 80’s Mexico. It follows Concepción (Ilse Salas), the matriarch of the most important beauty pageant in the country, who, together with a team of expert makeup artists, trainers, and even surgeons, welcomes the 32 finalists to her estate, La Encantada. There, the contestants will experience a 3-month hard training until they reach the Miss Mexico pageant. The truth is that underneath the appearances, the clothes, and the makeup, there is a dark world and, in the end, the contestants will empower each other and unite forces to leave the contest alive.
