Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi is back with their latest feature effort, “Silent Friend,” and we have a new trailer for the upcoming drama. The title refers to the tree at the centre of the film, a ginkgo tree, as we get to explore three different timelines connected to this majestic tree.
We see actors such as Hong Kong star Tony Leung, Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm, and Léa Seydoux among the cast of characters. “Silent Friend” features both English and German (with English subtitles) dialogue, and Enyedi, you may remember, is the director of Academy Award-nominated “On Body and Soul.”

An official logline shared with us by 1-2 Special:
At the heart of an old German university grows a majestic ginkgo tree, its lifespan measured in centuries. As the years pass, the distinguished plant bears witness to the private lives of those who seek shade under its boundless branches. In 2020, a visiting neuroscientist conducts a series of experiments into the possibilities of botanical consciousness. In 1972, a young student is profoundly changed by studying the behavior of a simple geranium. And in 1908, the university’s first female student’s photographic inquiries reveal sacred patterns of the universe hidden within the humblest of plants. Three lonely souls, three outsiders. Over time, each is transformed by the quiet, enduring, and mysterious power of nature.
You can check out that trailer for “Silent Friend” below, as the film is set to open in NYC on May 8 at the Lincoln Center and Angelika Film Center. The added bonus here is that both Enyedi and Leung will be there in-person.
