Sony Slots New 'Ghostbusters' Sequel For December 2023

Typically, December is an incredibly popular time for a major studio to debut a tentpole feature. Last year, we saw “Spider-Man: No Way Home” break records around the holiday season. And this year, we’re getting “Avatar: Way of the Water” and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.” But next year? Well, that’s a big question mark. But Sony has made the first move by scheduling the new “Ghostbusters” sequel.

According to Deadline, Sony is expected to debut the untitled “Ghostbusters” sequel on December 20, 2023. That puts the sequel smack dab in the middle of the holiday season and sets it up to be another financial success for the studio. Not much is known about the sequel to last year’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” other than the new film is expected to come back to New York City and bring even more familiarity to the franchise.

But wait! Why isn’t the 2023 Holiday Season not already filled up with movies? That’s odd, right? Yes, it sure is. However, the biggest problem is that Disney announced a new “Star Wars” film for December 2023 but isn’t likely going to be able to deliver on that promise, leaving a prime spot for a studio to swoop in and take advantage of.

Remember, “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” was expected to be that December 2023 release. That film was shelved after Patty Jenkins had to put it on the backburner and focus on “Wonder Woman 3.” Then it appears that Taika Waititi is nowhere near ready to get his “Star Wars” film into production, which means 2023 is wide open. Disney was hoping to fill the spot because it’s an “off” year for the “Avatar” sequels, as those are arriving every two years beginning later this year.

However, don’t be mistaken. There will be other films released in December 2023. “Wonka” is expected to arrive a week before the “Ghostbusters” sequel. There’s also the animated film, “The Tiger’s Apprentice.” And who knows, there could be delays that result in another surprise addition to the holiday season? We’ll just have to wait and see.

But for now, at least, Sony is hoping to take advantage of an opening and score a major win for the “Ghostbusters” franchise.
