‘Spider-Verse’: Sony Turned Down Pitch To Include Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield & Tom Holland In The Film

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is a film that loves to simultaneously poke fun and revere the comic book lore that inspired it. It has the emotional heft that comes with the family issues inherent with a ‘Spidey’ film while also featuring a character that is a talking cartoon pig called Spider-Ham. It works, in spite of all that craziness, thanks in large part to the filmmakers involved, including producer Christopher Miller. But according to the producer, there was one scene that was pitched to the studio that was a bit too much.

Last night, Miller took part in a quarantine watchalong for ‘Spider-Verse,’ and throughout the viewing of the film, he dropped little nuggets of behind-the-scenes information about the Oscar-winning animated film. And one of the reveals involved a previously-speculated team-up between live-action ‘Spider-Man’ actors Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Apparently, the filmmakers wanted to bring them all together in the film, as an end-credits scene but Sony shot it down.

Miller revealed, “We pitched the Sony brass an ambitious tag involving Spider-Ham, Tobey, Andrew, and Tom. They felt it was ‘too soon.’”

What Sony meant by “too soon” isn’t explained, as the film was released in late-2018, years after Garfield and Maguire gave up the role, and well into the current run of Holland. Maybe the studio wants to hold that team-up for the upcoming ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel? Who knows?

But it appears that fans were pretty close to seeing all three live-action, big-screen Spideys team up for the animated film. Sadly, we don’t know if that opportunity will exist again. The ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel is scheduled to arrive in 2022.
