Actress and longtime muse of filmmaker Alex Garland, Sonoya Mizuno (“Crazy Rich Asians”), is set to make her feature film directorial debut with the mysterious film “Stages,” which is said to be drawing from her background as a skilled ballet dancer, according to the original report hailing from Variety.
Sadly, further details on “Stages” are unknown (taking cues from “Black Swan” perhaps?), and whether Mizuno will be stepping in front of the camera as an actor in the film is unclear, but if she ultimately does, it wouldn’t be much of a shock.

Garland, who previously directed Mizuno on “Ex Machina,” “Civil War,” “Annihilation,” “Men,” and the tech-noir thriller series “Devs,” is set to produce the pic, which is set at A24 and Film4. Others involved on the producing team are Peter Rice, Agile Films‘ Myles Payne, and Sam Ritzenberg.
Mizuno has also appeared in HBO‘s mega-popular “Game of Thrones” spinoff series, “House of the Dragon,” alongside lending her voice to animated franchise projects such as “Terminator Zero” and “Star Wars: Visions.” Most recently, she was seen in the U.K.-set action comedy “Deep Cover” that was released earlier in the year.
Most recently, Gardland returned to his screenwriting roots for a trilogy of rage virus installments with Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later,” and the upcoming sequel helmed by Nia DaCosta, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” coming to theaters on January 16. However, he’s set to direct a feature adpatation of the dark fantasy video game “Elden Ring” (the Japanese-published game had the creative involvement of “Game of Thrones” author/creator George R.R. Martin) as his next effort, and it is unclear if Mizuno will join the cast led by Kit Connor (“Civil War”) or not.
