'Summer of '84' Trailer: 'Turbo Kid' Filmmakers Bring You A Fun, Coming-Of-Age Film With A Serial Killer

“Even serial killers live next door to somebody.”

With that one bit of dialogue, you get the basic premise of the upcoming thriller “Summer of ’84.” As the new trailer shows, the film follows a group of young kids in 1984 as they attempt to figure out if a serial killer lives in their neighborhood. But the plot isn’t the only thing worth mentioning about the trailer. You see, “Summer of ‘84” leans into the ‘80s setting so much that “Stranger Things” looks modern by comparison.

And that’s far from a bad thing. The filmmakers behind “Summer of ‘84” go by the collective name of RKSS. While the moniker might not ring any bells, they are a group of three filmmakers that burst onto the scene thanks to their 2015 film, “Turbo Kid.” If you’re familiar with that film, then you know exactly what you’re going to get with this new film that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Much like “Turbo Kid,” “Summer of ‘84” features a look and feel that is ripped from the era. The music, the setting, the way it’s produced, it’s all unadulterated ‘80s. And much like “Turbo Kid,” it appears that “Summer of ‘84” is going to have the same fun and heart that helped that film gain cult status.

The film stars Graham Verchere, Judah Lewis, Caleb Emery, Cory Gruter-Andrew, Tiera Skovbye, and Rich Sommer. You may recognize Skovbye from her recurring role as Polly in “Riverdale” (shush, naysayers!), and Sommer is probably best known for his roles in “Mad Men,” “Hello, My Name is Doris,” and the video game “Firewatch.” Wow, “Turbo Kid,” “Riverdale,” and “Firewatch” mentions in the same article? You guys are getting an unprecedented peek into my mind this time. But I digress.

“Summer of ‘84” is scheduled to hit select theaters on August 10, as well as VOD/Digital on August 24.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Summer, 1984: The perfect time to be 15 years old and care free. But when neighborhood conspiracy theorist Davey Armstrong begins to suspect his police officer neighbor might be the serial killer all over the local news, he and his three best friends begin an investigation that soon turns dangerous.
