Charlize Theron Confirms Development Of 'Atomic Blonde' Sequel

The hype surrounding Charlize Theron’sAtomic Blonde” was pretty big when it was released last year. The spy thriller/martial arts spectacle was supposed to bethe launch of a new franchise for the actress. Helmed by half of the “John Wick” creative duo David Leitch, the film was released to middling reviews and didn’t exactly light up the box office the way everyone was hoping. Franchise hopes seemed dashed. But maybe not.

During a recent SFFilm Tribute (via IndieWire), Theron was talking about her filmography, when she dropped a bit of a bombshell about “Atomic Blonde.” “We’re working on a sequel,” said Theron.

While the first film only made a hair under $100 million worldwide, the film wasn’t a total loss considering the relatively small $30 million production budget. A similar situation occurred with the aforementioned “John Wick.” That film grossed $88 million off a $20 million budget, but the sequel saw its box office grow to $171 million worldwide. Not too shabby.

And with Theron’s star power, combined with the film potentially growing in popularity with its home release, there’s no doubt that everyone involved is hoping an “Atomic Blonde” sequel can replicate that success.

It must be said that “working” on a film can mean a lot of different things, however. Maybe they’re just developing a story and seeing if there’s interest. Perhaps, a script is already written and they’re just figuring out contracts and scheduling. Either way, its still way too early to tell whether or not “Atomic Blonde 2” will see the light of day.

Charlize Theron will next be seen in “Tully,” which is about as far away from “Atomic Blonde” as you can get. The film features Theron as a mother struggling with life raising her children, when a night nanny named Tully is welcomed to the family. The film is the reunion of Theron with her “Young Adult” collaborators, writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman.

However, with this latest news, there’s definitely a possibility we’ll see Theron’s British spy Lorraine Broughton kicking ass in the future.
