'Undine' Trailer: Christian Petzold's Riffs On 'The Little Mermaid' For Berlin

For years now, filmmaker Christian Petzold has enjoyed a bit of notoriety among international film fans for his career of very unique projects. Last year, his film “Transit” seemed to crossover and become a bit more of a mainstream film, attracting plenty of acclaim from critics and enjoying a spot in many top 10s. Now, Petzold is set to return with a brand-new project, “Undine,” which hopes to, once again, capture the attention of film fans.

As seen in the new trailer for “Undine,” the film is described as a “love story for life and death.” But that is clearly not the only thing happening in the film. While much of the footage is out of context, the synopsis for the film describes an ancient myth, a broken heart, and perhaps a bit of murder. Oh, and a lot of water.

The new film stars Paula Beer, Franz Rogowski (the star of the filmmaker’s aforementioned film, “Transit,”) Maryam Zaree, and Jacob Matschenz. In addition to “Undine” and last year’s “Transit,” Petzold has enjoyed a career filled with acclaimed works, including films such as “Barbara,” “Yella,” and “Gespenster.”

“Undine” is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. A theatrical release has not been announced. Petzold has screened a number of his films in Berlin. Most recently, he earned a Silver Bear award for Best Director in Berlin for his 2012 film, “Barbara.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

Undine works as a historian lecturing on Berlin’s urban development. But when the man she loves leaves her, the ancient myth catches up with her. Undine has to kill the man who betrays her and return to the water.
