Universal Ready To “Figure Out” More ‘Wicked’ Sequels Or Spinoff After Massive Box Office Success

Universal Pictures should be taking a bow after the performance of “Wicked: For Good,” earning an impressive $147 million domestically on opening weekend (slightly below the weekend estimates, but still a massive haul and already has a global total of over $223 million), but it sounds like they’re looking to mine the world of author Frank L. Baum beyond the stage musical adapted for the screen by director Jon M. Chu.

Speaking with Vulture, the film division’s marketing chief, Michael Moses, revealed they’re already attempting to “figure out” how they could move forward with more “Wicked” sequels or possibly a spinoff, given the obvious audience demand. The first installment of the two-part event ended up earning $758.7 million globally when it was released last year, and the sequel is already doing gangbusters.

“Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe,” Moses told Vulture. “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”

Thankfully, for Universal, there are plenty of stories from the world of “Oz” to mine from Baum’s original group of books, as most of them are public domain, which means anyone can adapt them, and the studio just happens to be in the best position to use that material, as they now have an established franchise on their hands.

This would explain how both Warner Bros. and Disney (behind the slightly darker entries, such as Walter Murch‘s nightmare-fueled “Return To Oz” and Sam Raimi‘s VFX-heavy “Oz, The Great & Powerful“) were previously able to make their own “Oz” movies without really stepping on each other’s toes.

Princess Ozma, Princess Langwidere, The Nome King, Mombi, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik-Tok, and a slew of untapped Oz characters from those further adventures of Dorthy Gale and others could be reworked for this take on the universe. That said, what they end up doing is up in the air for the moment and unpredictable.
