This spring, the first set photos from Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated World War II film “Dunkirk” dropped online. The pictures, vague as they are about anything more than the visual aesthetic of Nolan’s film, show what is likely going to be a film of massive scale. And, if Nolan is known for anything, it’s for directing some of the biggest and most inventive movies of the past decade. So, while the true story limitations of “Dunkirk” might confine the blockbuster auteur some, there’s little doubt that he will churn out something action-packet, yet grand and soulful.

Because soul is one thing the director has certainly injected into each of his films. Love, more often than not, is the guiding desire for his central characters — especially in his most recent original efforts “Interstellar” and “Inception.” It’s an interest that’s pretty apparent in the new video essay from Pedro Herrero. “The Universe Of Christopher Nolan” is a 4-minute look at the grandeur and soulfulness of Nolan’s films, and the connection between the beautiful and the chaotic.
One thing the video highlights rather clearly is something that has helped make Nolan into the cinematic titan that he is: he’s a blockbuster director with independent sensibilities. In addition to his films being driven almost entirely by characters and their desires (something Marvel is getting better at and DC hasn’t yet heard of), his thematic concerns refuse the simplicity of so many other films of similar scope and scale. Meaning that his movies are some of the most satisfying things you can see in IMAX.
