“I loved the script. I think it’s very rare, particularly in Hollywood, that films like this are made. It operated on a different level. It has a dreamlike quality of magic realism. I’m very proud of it. I think they did a fantastic job in giving it an identity and life and tone that does the script justice,” Matt Smith recently told Total Film about Ryan Gosling‘s directorial debut "Lost River." “There was great freedom, and he sets up an environment where you can take risks….I’m really proud of this film. I think because Ryan’s Ryan, people will always have a particular take on it, because it’s impossible for people not to go ‘we have to judge it because it’s the movie star that we know as Ryan Gosling.’ "
The film was mostly savaged by critics when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last spring (here’s our review), Whether it was the movie press ready with knives out for an actor daring to not only direct his first movie but to have it play the prestigious festival, or if it was simply a flawed film, now you can have a taste of it yourself with the first trailer dropping online. Starring Smith along with Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn and Eva Mendes, the film tells the fantastical story of a mother and son in an underwater world.
"Lost River" opens in limited release and arrives on home video this spring. Watch below.
