August: Osage County

With TIFF heading into its last few days, and NYFF around the corner, we’re only at the start of the awards season, and Harvey Weinstein will be in full effect. This year in Toronto, he’s been busy acquiring films and unveiling a small handful of movies, but one of most high profile was “August: Osage County.”

Featuring an awards season bait worthy cast led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, this scream fest (read our review), chronicles a few weeks in the household of the testy Westons, who are united when the family patriarch passes away. It’s really about two hours of people insulting each other, and John Wells‘ workmanlike direction doesn’t seem to grasp the juiciness of the Tracey Letts‘ Pulitzer Prize winning source material. And then there is the minor controversy over the ending, and without going into spoiler territory, all this writer will say is that it actually makes sense, giving a shape to the story that works cinematically. It’s a smart move to break away from the structure of the play and gives the overall film a needed shape.

Anyway, you can see for yourself when the film opens on Christmas Day. Watch below followed by some new pics.
