'When They See Us' Exclusive Music: Listen To A Track From The Emmy-Nominated Soundtrack To Ava DuVernay's Netflix Series

Recently, when the Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced, one of the most celebrated series was Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed “When They See Us.” And among its 16 nominations, one of them is courtesy of the beautiful score composed by Kris Bowers.

Now, with the upcoming soundtrack to “When They See Us” arriving later this week, we’re proud to be able to give our readers a chance to listen to an exclusive track from the Emmy-nominated composition. If you have yet to see “When They See Us,” the hard-hitting drama follows the incredible true story of The Central Park Five (as they were once called), a group of young teens that were convicted for a crime they didn’t commit back in 1989. DuVernay’s harrowing series expertly captures the outrage and injustice that followed these men for decades.

And as the filmmaker explains, she credits Bowers’ score for helping to bring the Emmy-nominated project to a whole new level.

“When I listen to Kris Bowers’ gorgeous score for ‘When They See Us,’ I feel all of the respect, empathy, and care he had for the story of the men once known as The Central Park Five,” said DuVernay. “I count my collaboration with Kris among one of the most beautiful of my career. And I’m truly thrilled that our viewers can now delve deeper into his musical narrative crafted with such skill and sensitivity.”

The composer also commented on the project, explaining that he felt the love that was put into the Netflix series and Bowers wanted that passion to translate into the music.

“I am incredibly honored to be a part of this project and to help tell the story of these five men,” said Bowers. “Ava was so trusting throughout the process, which meant a great deal as a fan of her work and given the delicacy and importance of the subject matter. Although this show is so heartbreaking and difficult to watch, Ava, the cast and crew all poured so much love into this story and I hope that can be felt in the score.”

You can stream “When They See Us” on Netflix now, and Lakeshore Records will release the soundtrack to the series on August 9. You can hear the exclusive track below:
