‘Wonder Woman 2’: Patty Jenkins Promises "A Great Love Story"

While some would call “Wonder Woman” a silver lining for DC Films, I’d call it life preserver. The film remains the lone bright spot in the otherwise mangled movie franchise, and is perhaps the one property and character keeping everything else afloat. There has already been rumors suggesting that Warner Bros. might make Wonder Woman the central focus of the superhero movie universe going forward, which makes sense for a character that has become beloved and iconic. Certainly, the sequel sounds like it’s going to bring lots of new dimension to Diana Prince.

Appearing on Variety’s Playback podcast, director Patty Jenkins discussed “Wonder Woman 2,” and where the story was headed. Obviously, it’s all broad strokes at the moment, but passion and action remain at the core of the superhero.

“It’s really still going to other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie but that ultimately in its third act turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that’s a formula that I really like, and I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered,” Jenkins said. “So it’s like that but because she is Wonder Woman and she’s here now and she’s fully developed, it’s got great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.”

Slow down… love story? One of the central character beats in “Justice League” was that Chris Pine‘s Steve Trevor, who died at the end of “Wonder Woman” to help save the world, was the only love of Diana Prince’s life. How would that work if “Wonder Woman 2,” as rumored, takes place in the ’80s? Does that mean the love Diana finds in the sequel still doesn’t measure up Steve? Or, have they changed the setting?

The latter scenario is certainly feasible, especially if Warner Bros. and DC are changing plans and putting Wonder Woman in the driver’s seat of their superhero franchise. They’ll want to advance the character in her standalone films to the current timeline. Or maybe, like we all should, they’ll just forget the events of “Justice League” ever happened.

As always the sequel will bring a mix of the old and new, with Jenkins sharing, “I feel like it’s just the right amount the same world of Wonder Woman as the first movie while being a completely different story that tackles something very different but very similarly singular. One story.”
