His first film since his phenomenal debut in 2016, “Under the Shadow,” “Wounds” comes from British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, who snagged the BAFTA for Best Debut for the latter film. His deft touch with slow-burning horror, impactful imagery, and subtle character development should be utilized to great effect. The film’s brief one-sentence synopsis offers very little in the way of plot details, but it sets up an intriguing premise that’s sure to deliver an intense, terrifying experience:

Disturbing and mysterious things begin to happen to a bartender in New Orleans after he picks up a phone left behind at his bar.

Johnson’s star turn in “Suspiria,” one of the best horror movies in recent memory, has established her as a strong new player in the genre, but Hammer, despite dipping into thriller territory in recent films like “Free Fire” and “Hotel Mumbai,” has yet to take the full plunge into psychological horror. If the trailer and early reactions to the film are any indications, both actors will do a remarkable job with horrifying material.

Starring alongside them is “Atlanta” standout Zazie Beetz, who looks to carry the momentum from her breakout year in 2018, Karl Glusman, and Brad William Henke.

“Wounds” will debut on Hulu on October 18. You can watch the trailer below.
