Yorgos Lanthimos In Negotiations To Direct A New Feature Film, ‘The Hawkline Monster’

Yorgos Lanthimos is a filmmaker that doesn’t make “normal” films. Just watch his previous movies, such as “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “The Favourite,” and it’s clear that the director isn’t interested in making a run-of-the-mill feature. So, it makes complete sense that his next feature would be the long-awaited film “The Hawkline Monster.”

According to THR, Lanthimos is in negotiations to helm the film “The Hawkline Monster” for New Regency. The project has been lingering in development hell for decades, previously as the passion project for the late Hal Ashby and eventually Tim Burton. However, it appears that Lanthimos is the guy that will finally bring the adaptation of Richard Brautigan’s novel.

“The Hawkline Monster” tells the story of a young woman, named Magic Child, that hires two gunslingers to kill a monster that lives in the ice caves below the house owned by Miss Hawkline. Clearly, this is the type of strange, high-concept film that is perfectly suited for Lanthimos. It also marks yet another genre for the filmmaker, who is also a fan of switching things up with each project.

When Ashby was attached to direct, he had the pairings of Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman, followed by Jeff and Beau Bridges, picked out for the leads. Once the project was passed to Burton, the filmmaker had Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson attached. However, neither filmmaker was able to bring the project to production.

Back in November, it was revealed that Lanthimos was also circling a TV series project called “The Man in the Rockefeller Suit.” It’s unclear which project will happen first. Either way, it appears that Yorgos Lanthimos is about to begin production on something new and that’s always good news.
