Andrew Garfield Joins ‘It Follows’ Director David Robert Mitchell's ‘Under The Silver Lake’ & Andy Serkis' 'Breathe'

With the great “The Amazing Spider-Man” blockbuster experiment behind him, Andrew Garfield is dusting himself off and heading back toward the kind of roles and movies he was making before Sony came knocking. He got back on the arthouse horse with Ramin Bahrani’s “99 Homes,” and this year alone he has two big projects on the way, the Mel Gibson directed WWII drama “Hacksaw Ridge,” and Martin Scorsese’s long brewing dream project “Silence.” And the actor has lined up another autuer driven vehicle that sounds very promising.

Garfield has attached himself to star in “Under The Silver Lake” from “It Follows” director David Robert Mitchell. There are no details yet at the moment, but it once again finds the filmmaker pivoting to another genre, in what’s being described as a Los Angeles-set, noir crime thriller. Holy heck, yes. It’s another interesting change of direction for Mitchell who has previously done coming-of-age (“Myth Of The American Sleepover”) and modernist throwback horror (“It Follows”).

Cameras will start rolling at the end of the summer, but buyers will get the first taste when it hits the Cannes market next week.

But that’s not it for Garfield. The the actor has also joined Andy Serkis‘ “Breathe.” Penned by William Nicholson (“Gladiator“), he’ll star alongside Claire Foy in the story of a man stricken by polio, and his devoted wife, who helps him continue to live life to the fullest. No word yet on when it will shoot, but given that Jungle Book: Origins” has been pushed back a full year, Serkis might have some time on his hands. [THR/Deadline]
