Well, the least guarded secret at HBO Max has been made official as they’ve announced today that they are indeed moving forward with Season 2 of “IT: Welcome To Derry” after the Pennywise prequel series set in the 1960s has moved on to heading further back in the past, this next batch of episodes that will be set in 1935, exlporing more lore of Derry, Maine, after the first season tied Dick Hallorann from “The Shining” to the shared universe of Stephen King‘s “IT.”
As per the official announcement, Brad Caleb Kane will serve as showrunner after recently working on the first season and spearheading another legacy horror prequel show, A24 and Peacock‘s “Friday the 13th” streaming series “Crystal Lake,” starring Linda Cardellini. It is being produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, with Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti executive producing through their Double Dream production company. Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis, and Dhana Gilbert are also part of the executive producer team.
We’re also expected to see Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård (“John Wick 4,” “The Death of Robin Hood”) back in the iconic role of the child-eating interdimensional creature, Pennywise. Although we’ll have to wait to learn who the new cast will be, as they’re not mentioned in the big announcement.
An official logline of the next season as provided by HBO:
Set in the world of Stephen King’s ‘IT’ universe, “IT: Welcome To Derry” is based on King’s “IT” novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films “IT” and “IT Chapter Two.” Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.
“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!” the Muschiettis (Andy and Barbara) said in an official joint statement for the show’s renewal.
