Darren Aronofsky's New Film Was Shot On 16mm, Will Be Scored By Jóhann Jóhannsson

It’s not easy to make a movie in secret these days, particularly one that has a cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Domhnall Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer and more. But Darren Aronofsky has done just that, recently wrapping production on his next film, which is reported to revolve around “a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” But speaking at the Reykjavík Film Festival, the director teased just a little bit more about what we can expect from the movie.

“I think all my early films were more about ideas,” he said. “When it came to ‘Noah,’ there was this clear environmental statement in the original gospel, which was interesting to push forward. My latest project probably has similar political intentions behind it, but first and foremost responsibility as a narrative filmmaker is making something that is emotional and can connect with an audience.”

Adding further intrigue, Aronofsky revealed that the film was shot on 16mm, except for the last day of production which utilized digital cameras for special-effects purposes. Even more, the filmmaker will be breaking with his long-running composer Clint Mansell, who has tuned up all of his movies to date, and has tapped Jóhann Jóhannsson (“Sicario,” “The Theory Of Everything,” “Blade Runner 2049“) to score the untitled movie.

Some intriguing clues to mull over as Aronofsky heads into post-production for a planned release of the movie next year by Paramount Pictures. It should be noted that “Pi,” “Black Swan,” and “The Wrestler” all utilized 16mm, so the format is nothing new for the filmmaker, but at a surface-level observation, it sounds like his next movie is merging the aesthetics of those films with the political concepts of “Noah.” And we definitely can’t wait to see the result.
